Step 1: On-Site Sorting
The sorting process starts at your property. As we load our truck, we separate items into categories:
- Recyclable metals — old appliances, bed frames, metal shelving
- E-waste — computers, TVs, phones, cables
- Green waste — garden clippings, branches, timber
- Donatable items — furniture and goods in usable condition
- General waste — everything else
This sorting at the source means we can direct each waste stream to the right facility, maximising recycling and minimising landfill.
Step 2: Donation and Reuse
You'd be surprised how much "rubbish" still has life in it. Working furniture, functioning appliances, clean clothing, and household goods get directed to local charities and op shops in the Northern Rivers. We work with organisations across the region to ensure usable items find new homes rather than landfill cells.
Common items we regularly donate include couches in good condition, working fridges and washing machines, bookshelves, dining tables, and children's furniture.
Step 3: Recycling
The Northern Rivers has solid recycling infrastructure, and we use all of it:
- Metal recycling: scrap metal goes to local recyclers who process steel, aluminium, and copper. A single fridge contains up to 60kg of recyclable metal.
- E-waste recycling: electronics go to certified e-waste processors. Under federal regulations, e-waste must be processed by accredited facilities that safely extract valuable materials and handle hazardous components.
- Timber recycling: untreated timber gets mulched for landscaping. Treated timber is disposed of separately to prevent soil contamination.
- Mattress recycling: specialised recyclers break mattresses down into their component parts — steel springs, foam, fabric — each recycled separately.
- Green waste composting: garden waste goes to commercial composting facilities where it becomes mulch and soil conditioner.
Step 4: Responsible Disposal
Only after sorting, donating, and recycling do we take the remaining waste to licensed landfill facilities. In the Byron Shire, this means the Myocum Resource Recovery Centre or other licensed facilities in the region. These sites are engineered to contain waste safely, with lined cells, leachate management, and methane capture systems.
Our Diversion Rate
We track our recycling and diversion rates carefully. Currently, we divert approximately 60-70% of collected waste away from landfill through recycling, donation, and composting. Our goal is to push this above 80% as recycling infrastructure in the Northern Rivers continues to improve.
What About Hazardous Materials?
Some items require special handling:
- Paint: taken to council chemical collection points
- Batteries: dropped at designated battery recycling points
- Asbestos: we don't handle asbestos — this requires a licensed asbestos removalist
- Gas bottles: returned to gas suppliers or taken to designated collection points
